“Ah, it’s like an old friend with new clothes.”
That was the comment from a friend who recently took a peek at my new book. Yes, thanks to our wonderful publisher, Anne Knudsen of Breckling Press, Diana (McClun) and I have maintained a similar look and feel to that of the previous two editions. But don’t let the familiar cover fool you: we have included 28 new quilts and step-by-step photos.
Here’s one of the new patterns. We had so much fun creating with all fresh new lines of fabric available today. This Pinwheels quilt showcases the beautiful design of Lotta Jansdotter.
Keeping with our traditional style, we have included yardage and cutting charts for a variety of quilt sizes. So happy to be done with all the math involved in working on these!
Here’s one of my favorites, Lazy Day Quilt, designed and made by Gail Abeloe of Back Porch Fabrics in Pacific Grove, CA.
Since our books have always been designed to be used as textbooks, we have included teaching samplers for both piecing and appliqué. The Beginning Sampler is a collaboration by Joni Tembreull and Kathy August. Kathy also added her magic touch with the quilting designs. I think the Appliqué Sampler is the perfect size for introducing this technique to interested quilters. It is designed and made by Annie Smith and machine quilted by Vicki McEnerney.
The opening of the book greets you with some amazing beauty shots taken by the talented Kerby Smith. I think only a patient photographer could convince the handsome pair in the next photo to pose so perfectly for the camera. But don’t let those gorgeous faces fool you. As soon as the shot was taken, the one on the right quickly grabbed the quilt and headed off into the pasture. What a rascal! Guess he had had enough.
I could go on and on but really need to take care of my next project, which is preparing for a Teacher Training Workshop in Utah. I’m excited to be able to work with 40 eager teachers who are interested in using this book as a text in their classrooms. I understand that I need to pack some warm clothes as cold weather is expected. I sit here wearing sandals and a t-shirt enjoying the last warm days of a California autumn. Since it snowed in Salt Lake yesterday, I guess I’ll be rummaging through my closet . . . and probably follow up with a trip to the mall!
Just a reminder that it’s not too late to send in your requests to be one of our book reviewers and receive a FREE book. Click here and scroll to the end of the post for details.
Until next time, happy creating everyone!
